NYCUDL Press Release

DEBATE NIGHT TO PROMOTE LEGAL EDUCATION FOR ALL SPONSORED BY BAKERHOSTETLER February 25, 2016- New York, NY - The New York City Urban Debate League (NYCUDL), the largest debate league in the country, has partnered with BakerHostetler, a leading national law firm, to create an event focused on sharpening the critical thinking and public presentation skills of area high school students while exposing them to the legal profession. On February 25, 2016, BakerHostetler attorneys will gather alongside other legal, financial, and business professionals in order to engage with and provide feedback to students from across New York City as they participate in a spirited debate around whether the United States should implement a carbon tax. Putting a price on carbon emissions has been a key issue for leading political figures (including New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo) and NYCUDL debaters will argue both sides of the resolution in front of a distinguished panel. Following the scrimmage, students will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session about college and career readiness. The Debate Night is part of a series the NYCUDL does each year, partnering with professionals who are passionate about youth and community engagement. Debate offers many underrepresented students access to a safe space for dialogue while enhancing their leadership, public speaking and decision-making skills--tools that have proven critical for long term success. In addition to the impact debate makes on student self-esteem and critical thinking skills, participation in Debate Nights helps to improve the diversity of entrants into the legal profession and can thereby, even impact the level of access of the general public to legal services.
